11/6/2023 0 Comments Kobo clara 2e review![]() Sharper text is always nice, especially on a smaller screen, but I also appreciated the quicker feel in navigating my way around. While I’m personally more a fan of 7-inch displays on eReaders, I really liked the Clara 2E. The Clara HD was about the same size, but the Clara 2E just feels like a different product altogether. Having also tested those devices, plus the Nia, I often felt like I was holding an amalgamation of all three. The key difference is the Clara 2E is far more portable-small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. Plus, the Nia isn’t waterproof at all.Įssentially, this device is a smaller variant of the Libra 2 and Sage because it shares in features they introduced. Not to mention the Clara 2E is also sharper to look at. For one, the Nia’s display doesn’t change to a warmer tone at night. It shares similar dimensions to the Nia, so it felt very much like I was holding that device while reading on it, save for the very obvious differences. The Clara 2E doesn’t really change how you read ebooks, it just offers a relatively smaller device to do it with. Pair headphones or a speaker and you can listen to a book rather than reading it. Yes, that’s right, the Clara 2E joins the Libra 2, Sage, and Elipsa in supporting audiobooks. Kobo doubled the internal storage to 16GB, good enough for up to 12,000 ebooks or 75 audiobooks. If you want Dark Mode, that’s in here, too. Plus, there’s ComfortLight Pro to change the colour temperature. The body wraps around the 6-inch E Ink 1200 Carta display, which is snappier and sharper than previous models. Apart from the power button in the rear and USB-C port at the bottom, there’s nothing else to note. What might simplify this process is how simple the Clara 2E’s body is. No word on whether Kobo will do this with other future eReaders, so we’ll have to wait and see. As someone who believes in the idea of reusing plastic for consumer goods, I think it’s a cool development. The recycled materials are a mixture of water bottles, CDs, DVDs, and other single-use plastics. What makes it unique is that Kobo says 85% of the body was made with recycled plastics. ![]() While a tad wider, the Clara 2E is pretty much the same size and weight as its predecessor. All that’s changed here with the Clara 2E, starting with IPX8 water resistance, making this device well suited for the pool or tub. That was really convenient at the time, except it didn’t include key features, like a water-resistant body. The upgrades are nice but when it comes to reading ebooks both models pretty much perform identically. The previous Clara HD focused more on a sharper display and lighter body. I guess Kobo really likes that design and didn’t feel like much needed changing. Most of the changes are very subtle, which is kind of surprising considering the Clara HD was released nearly four and a half years ago now. The Clara 2E has a blue back so it’s easy to tell it from behind, and they moved the power button from the bottom to the back, which helps avoid accidentally hitting the power button. Looking at them from the front the two are virtually indistinguishable from each other. It’s interesting how similar the Clara 2E is to the Clara HD. The difference is very subtle but it is noticeable under certain lighting conditions. The Clara 2E has a newer Carta 1200 screen, so blacks are a bit darker than the Clara HD, and it helps make the text stand out a little more. The overall dimensions are slightly different, just enough to make it so covers aren’t interchangeable: Kobo Clara HD measurements: 110 x 159.6 x 8.35 mm Kobo Clara 2E measurements: 112.05 x 159.02 x 8.66 mm. Carta 1200 E Ink screen (slightly darker blacks).I can’t say one is better than the other, just slightly different. The lights have slightly different color tones on my Clara 2E, but that’s common among devices of the same generation so that’s not unexpected. ![]() The frontlights are pretty much the same as well.
